UPDATE at 2:53 p.m.: One person was killed and two others injured during a shooting at the Douglas Heights Apartments early Sunday morning.

No one involved had been identified as of Sunday evening.

Investigators were on scene throughout the morning Sunday to gather evidence and speak with anyone who may have known what happened.

The privately owned Douglas Heights offers housing near the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. It is located on Douglas Street between M.L. King Boulevard and E. 10th Street.

The seven-story, 354,000-square-foot apartment complex opened with fanfare in 2016 to offer a one-of-a-kind living option for university students and others in the city.

It is the complex where former Chattanooga police officer Benjamin Dessalines took a woman caught shoplifting and allegedly sexually assaulted her. He was arrested and charged with felony kidnapping and felony sexual battery. The kidnapping charge was later dropped. He was indicted for sexual battery in May.

Earlier this year, a man allegedly pepper-sprayed a police officer after he got caught trying to break into a vehicle parked in an area outside Douglas Heights.

The man, Justin Conner, was charged with two counts of theft of property over $1,000, burglary, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, vandalism and possession of a controlled substance.
