A Hays State Prison lieutenant will face federal charges after she allegedly tried to smuggle marijuana.

According to a statement of charges, filed with the Floyd County, Georgia, Jail, Lt. La'Keshia Katersa Thomas got paid to sneak contraband into the prison. She allegedly dealt with Gangster Disciples.

Thomas was arrested Tuesday at a home in the 100 block of Leon Street in Rome. When officers searched her home, according to the statement, they found more than 1 ounce of marijuana. (The statement does not say specifically how much of the drug the officers found.)

A spokesman for the Georgia Department of Corrections said the FBI led the investigation against Thomas. She faces charges of possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute, participation in a criminal street gang, violation of the oath of an officer and trading with inmates.

Officers booked Thomas in the Floyd County Jail around 11 p.m. Tuesday, and she remained in custody without a bond Wednesday night. She will go before a judge for a first appearance hearing Thursday morning.
