A single-car accident claimed the life of a person Sunday who has not yet been identified after a crash on Elk River Mills Road nine miles west of Athens, Alabama, according to a news release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

ALEA reported that a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado left the road around 12:22 a.m. CDT and struck an embankment, then caught fire on Elk River Mills Road. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a second crash around 7:40 a.m. CDT Sunday on Interstate 65, an 8-year-old child was killed in a single-car accident after a 2019 Dodge Durango, driven by Mary Tobar, 50, of San Antonio, Texas, left the roadway on I-65 and overturned, according to ALEA. The child, who was not restrained, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Tobar was injured and transported to a local area hospital, while two other passengers in the Durango were not injured. The crash happened three miles north of Decatur.

Both crashes are still under investigation, according to ALEA.
