NEW YORK -- Next year's Tribeca Film Festival, which marks the annual event's 20th anniversary, will happen in June as opposed to its normal April and May time slot thanks to the ongoing pandemic.

It'll run from June 9 to June 20, "reflecting shifting calendars and efforts to ensure the festival moves forward in the safest environment," it was announced Friday.

Filmmakers whose work qualified for this year's festival, which was shut down in March in response to escalating coronavirus cases in New York City, will be invited to submit their films for next year's fest.

"We look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary and to honoring what our founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro have made a reality in bringing storytellers and communities together," Tribeca Enterprises Chief Creative Officer Paula Weinstein said in a statement.

This year's festival went on, in part, digitally in April, with flicks up for awards being judged remotely and winners announced on the festival's website.

Event organizers aren't ruling out a digital version of next year's extravaganza either, as it remains unclear when the pandemic will no longer be an issue.

Festival director Cara Cusumano said, "As we take our first steps towards the next edition of our festival, we have centered our thoughts and plans on the filmmakers and filmgoers who have been so affected by the challenges of the last few months. Whether it's in the cinema, online or outdoors, we look forward to welcoming everyone back to an innovative 20th anniversary festival in the spirit of our last 20 years celebrating community and storytelling in all their forms."

The event was established after 9/11 to bring people together in lower Manhattan and show resiliency after the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center.

"Tribeca looks forward to bringing the community together once again to celebrate emerging and established voices, discover award-winning filmmakers and creators and enjoy innovative experiences," the organization said Friday.
