PELHAM, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say they arrested six people in rural southwest Georgia during patrols targeting areas plagued by recent violent crimes.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that state, federal and local agencies took part in joint patrols in rural Pelham and surrounding Mitchell County.

They made 67 traffic stops over the course of eight hours Friday. Those stops yielded six arrests on charges including drunken driving, drug violations and illegal possession of a firearm.

The GBI said the patrols focused on an area where a recent spike in violent crimes includes more than 30 shootings and home invasions since January.
