Suspect in custody after shootout with Clayton County police

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) - A suspect was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after a shootout with Georgia police, authorities said.

A Clayton County police officer arrived at an apartment complex in Jonesboro to respond to a report of a person with a gun, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The two exchanged gunfire and the suspect then ran away, police spokeswoman Sgt. Julia Isaac said. Officers pursued and were able to take the suspect into custody.

The unidentified suspect was not injured and the officer does not have any life-threatening injuries, police added. It was not immediately clear if the officer was hit by the gunfire.

A weapon was found at the scene of the shooting along with a face mask and gloves.

Authorities did not immediately provide more details.
