Birmingham plans to turn vacant mall into shipping facility

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Birmingham city officials are planning to renovate a shuttered mall into a shipping and logistics facility.

City Councilor Hunter Williams told AL.com that the city's vacant Century Plaza Mall has been a "major point of concern" for people in Birmingham since it closed in 2009.

Williams said transforming the empty 750,000-square-foot plaza into a shipping facility will bring hundreds of jobs to the city. He said his office has received calls from residents who are supportive. But there's opposition, too: A neighborhood association recently voted against rezoning for the logistics facility.

The Birmingham city council has also yet to approve rezoning for the property. Officials did not reveal the company that will use the proposed facility.
