Report of fire forces evacuation at Alstom boiler plant

Employees at Alstom's boiler facility in Chattanooga were evacuated Monday afternoon due to a smoldering pipe.

Employees were grinding and working on a pipe when it began to smolder, causing the fire alarms to go off and the building to be evacuated, according to Bruce Garner, spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Garner said there was no actual fire, or damage caused from the incident. Six companies were dispatched to the fire, which is protocol when dispatching to a commercial building like Alstom, he said.

Operations at the plant are expected to return to normal.
