In a sign of the times, 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid models are being deeply discounted while Honda Pilot mid-size SUVs are fetching closer to full-MSRP.

That's good news if you are a hybrid sedan fan. Bargains abound on the quiet-running, gas-sipping, new-for-2018 Accord Hybrids at Chattanooga-area dealerships.

FAST FACTS

* Model: 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring * Exterior color: Crystal Black * Interior color: Black/gray * Engine: 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas, 181-hp electric * Horsepower: 212 combined * Transmission: CVT * Fuel economy: 47 mpg highway, 47 mpg city * Local Dealer: Economy Honda * Price (as tested): $35,605

Even a feature-packed, technological marvel like our 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring test sedan is available for thousands off its $35,605 MSRP at a local Honda dealership. Looking for a used or new car?

And if fuel prices spike - which is always a possibility - the Accord Hybrid is an even better value. Plus, you get the gorgeous new styling and terrific handling of a 2018-model Accord, which was completely redesigned this year.

At press time, Economy Honda in Chattanooga had six copies of the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid in digital inventory starting at $23,482, after discounts.

WHAT IS IT? The 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid touring is a five-passenger sedan powered by a combination gas-electric power-train. Under the hood you'll find a 143-horsepower, four-cylinder gas engine tethered to a 181-horsepower electric motor. The two power sources work in concert to provide up to 212 combined horsepower.

WHAT DOES IT COST? Our top-of-the-line touring model, provided for a one-week test drive by the manufacturer, lists for $35,605, including a $895 destination and handling charge. That's about $10,000 more than a base Accord hybrid.

WHAT WE LIKED: The sleek styling, superior fit and finish, ample backseat leg room, full-size trunk, great visibility, robust air-conditioning, head-up display, wireless phone charger, heated and ventilated front seats and virtual gauges.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: We are not big fins of Honda's button-based selector. The Accord Hybrid also has heavily weighted steering and the car is prone to droning during uphill driving.

WORTHWHILE OPTIONS: Honda prefers tiered-pricing to a la carte options. The Touring trim is packed with goodies including Apple Carplay/Android Auto smartphone interfaces, a 10-speaker premium audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, push-button start, 12-way power driver's seat, 17-inch alloy wheels and LED fog lights. It also includes Honda's suite of safety tech features called "Honda Sensing." Included are adaptive cruise control, collision mitigating braking system, lane-keep assist and road-departure warning.

BOTTOM LINE: If you are a contrarian who bucks trends, the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid is a high-tech marvel at a compelling price.
