Bands led by the combination of male and female vocals appeared to be a normal sighting back in the late '60s and the '70s. However, the two sexes seemed to somewhat separate themselves in the musical realm over the next few decades. Now, with the recent re-emergence of folk and Americana music, more and more acts are popping up with the blend of male and female harmonies. For these bands to set themselves apart from this trend, they must write great songs, exemplify tight musicianship, and the harmonies have to be spot-on. And nailing all three of these is not an easy task.

That is exactly what North Carolina-based Mandolin Orange has been succeeding at since the group's inception in 2009.

Comprised of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, Mandolin Orange is currently out on tour in support of the release of its fifth and newest album, Blindfaller. While Marlin serves as the main songwriter for the duo, both artists play multiple acoustic instruments and take turns with lead vocals, while delivering beautiful harmonies through each of their songs. But their vocals, at least Marlin's, are not something that is going to win a singing competition. They are not loud, soaring or demanding of attention. Their vocals are simple - yet elegant. And they blend perfectly with the music they accompany.

This lends to making the stories of their songs believable and relatable.

Over the years, Marlin and Frantz have stuck to what they do best and have not tried to change their sound or make their music more radio-friendly. This lends to the loyalty and growth of their fanbase, and if they continue down this path, they are certain to have a long career doing things their way.

They are no stranger to Chattanooga, having performed in multiple venues over the years, but they are making the step to a larger stage as they make their debut at the Revelry Room on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Bringing fellow folksters Dead Horses along with them for this show, a full night of Americana is in store for Chattanooga.
