Big Ridge swimmers get ready for an event at a swim meet in the 2015 season. The team recently moved up a tougher division and say they are ready for the challenges ahead.

Although the Big Ridge Raiders have moved up a division in the Chattanooga Area Swim League, Big Ridge Pool president and team representative Mary Jungels said she is confident the team will be able to rise to the occasion.

"We're very close-knit, and the team has been built up with confidence," she said. "Our staff and kids know what's required of them, and we've moved our way up. I think we're ready for the challenge."

The team is hosting a social at the pool Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m. to introduce the surrounding area to the team. Food will be available, and Jungels said it will be a good opportunity for parents and kids to learn about the program.

"You don't have to be a member of the pool if you want to be on the team or to come and be social," she noted.

While the team is flush with younger swimmers, she said they're especially looking for older swimmers who can join and be a mentor to the team.

The Raiders have around 100 members - up from the approximately 40 members the program had when it restarted in 2011, said Jungels.

For parents looking for a summertime sport for their kids, swimming could fit the bill. Because the team is composed of swimmers of ages 5-18, everyone can practice and compete at the same time. Also, swimming provides excellent, low-impact aerobic exercise that builds muscle and endurance.

The cost to join the Raiders is $115 for the first child and $80 for every additional child.

"We've got a lot of growth and experience behind us," Jungels said. "Everyone that's joined the team has stayed and rejoined, and I hope we can keep growing."
