The city of Lakesite has new leadership, following a reorganization of the City Commission at its January meeting.

David Howell, a member of the commission for eight years, was voted in as the city's new mayor, replacing Kenneth Wilkerson, who held the position for six years.

"I'm very humbled and honored to be selected," Howell said during a phone interview following the meeting. "I enjoy helping people that need help and serving in the community."

He said his goal as mayor is to continue to be frugal with taxpayers' money to keep the city's property taxes low.

"We also want to enhance the business area on Hixson Pike and encourage more businesses to come in as well," said Howell.

Commissioners also voted in Valerie Boddy as the city's vice mayor. She replaces John McPherson, whose 22 years of service to the city ended when he was not re-elected in November.
