Legal Aid of East Tennessee presented four key awards at its annual Pro Bono Night on Thursday at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.
The event is held to celebrate local attorneys who have donated time and legal services during the past year to those who otherwise could not afford an attorney. The top 50 who donated the most hours of service were recognized individually and presented with certificates of thanks, according to a news release from the organization.
Award winners included:
• U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tenn., was presented the Chief Justice William M. Barker Equal Access to Justice Award for his lifelong commitment to access to justice, the news release stated.
• T. Maxfield Bahner of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel, who agreed to take on two challenging, litigation-heavy cases, was named the Bruce C. Bailey Volunteer Lawyer of the Year.
• Miller & Martin received the Pro Bono Firm of the Year Award in recognition of its strong, firmwide commitment to access to justice in Chattanooga, according to the news release.
• The Hamilton County Herald received the 2013 Alexander Hamilton Award as a nonlegal corporation that furthers the betterment of access to justice or Legal Aid of East Tennessee's clients' well-being.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the programs of Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the news release stated.
