3rd annual Whitfield Oil Trojan Run recruits runners

More than 170 runners are expected to enter the third annual Whitfield Oil Trojan Run Saturday, April 26.

The certified 5k course runs through historic Chickamauga. Runners will take off at Crystal Springs Printworks, go through Holland-Watson Veterans Park and down portions of Cove Road, trying to beat their best time.

Day-of registration for the 5k as well as the 1-mile Fun Run is at 6:30 a.m. The 5k run begins at 8 a.m. and the Fun Run at 8:05 a.m.

The Trojan Run is hosted by the Gordon Lee Alumni Foundation Association. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the Chickamauga City School System.

In 2013, the event raised $17,500 to buy a new rolling computer lab for Gordon Lee Middle School. In 2012, the race raised $15,000, used to help complete the Gordon Lee Memorial High School Baseball/Softball Training Facility.

"We expect to raise more this year," said Gordon Lee Alumni Foundation Association member Cindy Roberts. "The school system will decide in May how to use the money. Based on the needs, it's decided on 'What's the biggest priority?' It helps supplement what the state no longer funds."

Race 5k registrants must pay $25 each or $30 the day of event and can choose between a Dri-Fit or a cotton shirt. Registration for the Fun Run costs $15 through April 25 and $18 the day of the event.
