MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Legislation providing for the display of the Ten Commandments in Alabama's public buildings is getting closer to clearing the Legislature.
The proposed constitutional amendment sponsored by Republican Rep. DuWayne Bridges of Valley won approval in the House last week and cleared the State Constitution and Elections Committee on Thursday. It now goes to the Senate. If approved by the Senate, it will go before Alabama voters in a statewide referendum.
The legislation provides for the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools and public buildings when combined with other documents. Several public buildings in Alabama already have displays that feature the Ten Commandments, including the state Capitol.
