Chattanooga firefighters pulled an unconscious mother and daughter from an East Chattanooga home after a fire in the kitchen filled the apartment with smoke late Monday night.
A neighbor heard a smoke alarm coming from the house at 2188 Camden Oaks Drive and called 911. But when firefighters arrived, they couldn't see any visible signs of fire or see any smoke, spokesman Bruce Garner said.
However, firefighters decided to force their way inside. There was a moderate amount of smoke inside the apartment. Upstairs, firefighters found a 28-year-old woman semi-responsive on her bed, and then found a four-year-girl unconscious in a second bedroom.
The family's pet dog was standing by the girl, barking -- perhaps in an attempt to wake the girl up, Garner said.
Firefighters carried both the woman and her daughter out of the home and gave them oxygen. Both were alert and talking within minutes, Garner said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Firefighters put out a fire in the kitchen that had started from food being left unattended on the stove. Firefighters believe the fire was accidental and the investigation is ongoing.
