Suspect in fatal Georgia crash seen jumping from overpass

GARDEN CITY, Ga. -- Authorities say witnesses saw a driver suspected of causing a fatal crash near Savannah jumping from a high overpass as though he was trying to flee the scene.

WTOC-TV reports one person was killed Monday morning when a car traveling the wrong way on Savannah's Interstate 516 bypass crashed head-on with a minivan.

Witnesses told police the wrong-way driver got out of his car and jumped off the overpass, falling about 30 feet onto train tracks below. He was taken injured to a hospital. Charges were pending.

Sgt. 1st Class Chris Nease of the Georgia State Patrol said witnesses indicated the driver was trying to escape. Nease said: "It was not a fall, it was a jump."

Names of the driver and the person killed were not immediately released.
