The former CEO of North Georgia Medical Center is accused of stealing more than $1 million from the hospital.

Gilmer County detectives arrested 48-year-old Jeffery Mark Dunn in Cherokee County, Ga., on Friday night, charging him with 21 counts of theft by deception. The sheriff's office did not provide many details on the case, saying only that it was a "very complex" investigation that lasted about two years.

Dunn remained in the Gilmer County Jail on Monday morning in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

"Even though detectives are concentrating their efforts on more blatant egregious allegations, we anticipate this investigation will be ongoing for some time," Sheriff Stacy Nicholson said in a release.

Earl Whiteley, the North Georgia Medical Center's current CEO, would not say whether the Ellijay hospital alerted police to the theft. Asked how long Dunn worked at the hospital Whitely replied, "For a long time."

Asked when Dunn stopped working at the hospital, Whitely referred the Times Free Press to his human resources department. There, an HR employee referred the Times Free Press back to Whiteley.

"The investigation that we've been cooperating with has been ongoing for a year and a half," Whiteley said. "We can't make any details known at this point in time."
