The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the apparent slaying of a local resident who was found dead in his home in Monteagle, Tenn.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland said a family member found the body of Kenneth Tate, 65, on Tuesday. Monteagle Police Chief Virgil McNeese said Tate lived alone at his home on Third Street and was well-known around town. The police chief said Tate had lived in the same location, on the Grundy County side of Monteagle, since at least 1994.

Tate's body was transported to Nashville for an autopsy, he said.

Niland said TBI officials cannot discuss details of the case while the investigation is ongoing.
