Two 18-year-old men were shot near the corner of Arlington Avenue and Monroe Street around 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to police.

One man suffered multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds and was listed in critical condition, while the second's wounds were deemed minor. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A press release issued Monday evening identified the victims as Montrell Franklin and Telly Petty, although it did not specify which of the two was in critical condition. The release said both men were in the street when a suspect approached them on foot and "fired mutliple rounds toward the two victims."

At the scene, Chattanooga Police Sgt. Gregory Wilhelm said neither of the victims provided information concerning the shooter. But the press release later described him as a black male with dark colored shorts or pants and a light colored shirt.

According to Hamilton County 911, the shots were fired in the 1500 block of Arlington Avenue.

One witness at the scene recounted hearing about seven shots fired, followed by the shooter running around the back of a house near Camden Street, where he was picked up in a new model black car that looked like a Toyota.

The witness said the shooter looked to be in his early to mid-20s and was wearing a turquoise baseball cap, grey shirt and blue jean shorts.

Wilhelm said he could not confirm any information about the shooter, however.

Several white markers at the scene marked where bullets landed after the shooting. At least one bullet hit the rear window of a white car in the area.

The witness noted that the shooting happened on Arlington Avenue, the same street where a pregnant woman was shot in the leg in April.

Wilhelm said he could not confirm if this shooting was gang-related.

Chattanooga Police Violent Crimes Bureau investigators are actively following all actionable leads.
