Husband and wife awoken by Deerfoot Drive fire

Firefighters successfully extinguished a fire Monday night in the 3800 block of Deerfoot Drive after the homeowners were awoken by their smoke alarm.

Theodore Herndon and his wife were asleep upstairs when the alarm activated and woke them up, allowing them to get out of the house safely and call 911, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, Capt. David Peace said they could see a fully involved garage fire with flames spreading quickly into the home and attic.

Firefighters attempted an interior attack with hand-held hoselines, but were ordered out of the house for their own safety when flames broke through the roof.

The crew eventually able to extinguish the fire.

No one was injured in the fire. The displaced couple said they have family and friends to stay with while the repairs are taken care of.

The cause of the fire is under investigation
