UPDATE at 1:02 a.m.: The Chattanooga Police Department confirmed in a news release that the man who was killed was shot while trying to rob two people at the Days Inn.

One man is dead after a shooting at the Days Inn on Carter Street just off M.L. King Boulevard.

Chattanooga police said late Friday a guest at the hotel may have been involved in the fatal shooting.

No information about the man who was shot has been released at this time.

Chattanooga police spokesman Victor Miller did say the shooting happened in a breezeway outside the rooms and that a motel guest may have been involved.

Part of the parking lot was roped off by crime scene tape and investigators worked the scene as motel guests and diners at the attached City Cafe stood watching.

Some guests said the shooting was part of an attempted robbery, but the target instead pulled a weapon and shot the would-be robber. The man died at the scene.

Police would not confirm a robbery attempt but said they had a person of interest in the case, and there was no suspect on the loose.

As investigators worked, a man could be seen sitting in the rear of a police vehicle until it drove away shortly after 9 p.m.

Miller said the motel was continuing normal operations, although patrons won't be able to get to their cars in the taped-off area until investigators are through processing the scene.

This was the 120th shooting and the 32nd homicide in Chattanooga this year.
