Two Marion County officers injured in overnight crash on South Pittsburg Mountain

Two Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies were injured in a crash late Thursday on South Pittsburg Mountain while answering a domestic violence call, officials said.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating, according to Marion County Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett.

Burnett said one of the two deputies may have to have surgery to repair injuries to his upper arm but both were treated and released from Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga overnight and are now recovering at home.

Burnett said the crash happened on the curvy stretch in the 3900 block of State Route 156 west of the Patton School Road intersection on South Pittsburg Mountain.

Deputy Brian Davis was driving with fellow officer Chip Wampler as a passenger as they answered a domestic violence call around 11 p.m. CST Thursday, Burnett said.

"They weren't running emergency traffic," he said," the roads were just wet and slick and they lost control of the patrol car and hit a big oak tree head-on."

Davis sustain lesser injuries and is expected to miss only a couple of days of work, probably returning to his regular shift next week, Burnett said.

Wampler, however, could be a while recovering, the sheriff said.

Wampler, who suffered a multiple arm fractures and some cracked ribs, is a full-time Kimball Police Department officer who works part-time for the sheriff's office when the county agency is short-handed, Burnett said.

"He was filling in for a sick officer," he said.

The patrol car is totaled, the sheriff said.
