A man was arrested Wednesday after a police chase and subsequent pursuit in connection to an attempted homicide earlier this month.

Cobey Smith, 28, is accused of shooting at a woman on April 21 in the 1100 block of East 3rd Street. The woman wasn't injured, but her car was damaged, according to Hamilton County court records.

That day, Chattanooga police spoke to a woman who said she and her 17-year-old sister were traveling down East 3rd Street when a vehicle began to follow them, records state.

The woman pulled into a parking lot, and the vehicle turned in behind them, records show. An unknown female exited the second vehicle and tried to pull the woman out of her vehicle.

The alleged victim was defending herself from the second woman when the suspect fired six shots at her, according to court records.

The alleged victim "ducked her head down and reversed as fast as she could," investigators wrote in court documents. Her vehicle was hit once in the rear as she drove away.

That woman later told police she and Smith were in an argument over the ownership of her vehicle.

Eight days later, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office fugitive division spotted Smith driving in the intersection of Jersey Pike and Bonny Oaks Drive and tried to conduct a traffic stop. But Smith refused to stop and fled, leading detectives on a five-mile pursuit, court records show.

The pursuit came to an end when Smith crashed into a U.S. mail carrier vehicle in the 3500 block of Bonny Oaks Drive. No injuries were reported, and he was taken into custody.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Smith faces several charges in connection to the shooting and vehicle pursuit, including two counts of attempted criminal homicide, illegal firearm-related charges, reckless endangerment, vehicular assault and reckless driving.

He is expected in court on May 7.
