A man is facing several charges stemming from a Hixson duplex fire on Sunday night that injured himself and several Chattanooga police officers, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Robert Vandergriff, 41, has been charged with aggravated arson, reckless endangerment and five counts of attempted first degree murder. Fire investigators say he set two fires inside the Eldridge Drive home - one at the front door and one at a rear entrance - when police officers tried to arrest him.

Three officers were injured and two residents on the other side of the duplex were endangered by the fires, the release states.

Vandergriff remains in an out-of-state hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries. He will be extradited back to Hamilton County and taken into custody, according to the release.

This is the eleventh arson reported by the Chattanooga Fire Department in the last month.
