A South Pittsburg, Tennessee, woman was killed Wednesday in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 72 near Scottsboro, Alabama.

Sandra Dee Richardson, 58, of South Pittsburg, was a passenger in a 2015 Honda Accord driven by Melissa Carol Merritt, 64, of Jasper, Tennessee, that was struck head-on by another 2015 Honda Accord driven by a Scottsboro resident around 7:05 p.m. CST, according to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency spokesman Senior Trooper Chuck Daniel.

Merrit's Honda was traveling east in U.S. Highway 72's westbound lanes when it collided with the other Honda about three miles west of Scottsboro.

Both drivers were taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries while Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene, Daniel said in statement.

The driver of the other Honda was not identified. An investigation is continuing, he said.
