There will be some traffic snags starting at 9 p.m. Friday in the area of U.S. Highway 27 and Broad and Market streets near downtown Chattanooga.

Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will close the ramp from U.S. 27 south to Interstate 24 west from 9 p.m. Friday till 6 a.m. Monday to complete the installation of a second storm drain pipe under I-24, according to a TDOT news release.

Traffic will detour by taking the southbound exit from U.S. 27 to Broad Street, then following detour signs on surface streets to the I-24 west on-ramp, officials said.

Also, I-24 west will be reduced to a single lane in the area to perform the drain pipe installation. This ramp closure and lane reduction will create congestion, and drivers should expect delays.

The work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

The work by contractor Wright Brothers Construction Co. is part of the ongoing $32 million project to improve the I-24 interchanges at Broad Street and Market Street in Chattanooga. The 1.6-mile project will replace the loops and ramps. It is scheduled for completion by Aug. 31, 2023.

The road work is considered the biggest change in decades for motorists exiting I-24 to Chattanooga's Southside and Lookout Mountain.
