The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the Thursday morning shooting by Cleveland police of a man on Springhill Drive who was allegedly armed with a shotgun and was shot by officers when he advanced toward them.

Cleveland, Tennessee, resident Lloyd Grant McClung Jr., 71, of Springhill Drive, died as a result of wounds he sustained in the incident. It happened around 9 a.m. Thursday after three Cleveland police officers answered a disturbance call at the home, according to a TBI news release.

"The officers gave several commands for McClung to drop his weapon, which he ignored, and instead continued advancing toward the officers," TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine said in the release. "The situation escalated and resulted in two of the officers firing their weapons, striking McClung."

Cleveland police added a detail in a statement that followed the TBI's.

"At one point, while the male was walking toward officers, he fired a round from the weapon," Cleveland Police Department spokesperson Evie West said Thursday in a statement on the shooting.

After the shots were fired, officers attempted life-saving measures on the wounded man until EMS personnel arrived to transport McClung to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, she said.

"The three Cleveland Police Department officers involved were not injured during the event and were placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine per Cleveland Police Department policy," West said. "Please keep the family of the deceased and our officers in your thoughts and prayers during this time."

State agents are continuing the investigation independently into what led to the deadly shooting. DeVine said findings from the investigation will be turned over to the 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office for review.
