A 49-year-old woman died in a Friday morning crash near Interstate 75's exit 3A for East Brainerd Road, which had caused all northbound lanes to be shut down for five hours, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Traffic officials responded to the scene near the 340 block of the northbound lanes of I-75 at around 6 a.m. and determined that a GMC had become disabled while it was traveling north near the exit. The female driver left the vehicle in a lane, got out and then walked over to the median. A Toyota Corolla that was traveling in the same lane struck the GMC from behind. When a Toyota T100 saw the brake lights ahead and veered left to avoid the crash, the vehicle struck the woman, who was still standing by the median.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Corolla was taken to a local hospital for treatment for minor injuries. Several other vehicles were involved in the incident but no other injuries were reported.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information about the crash is encouraged to call police at 423-698-2525 or submit a tip via the CPD Mobile App. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
