A 66-year-old man was detained Thursday morning after allegedly fleeing with an ambulance and hitting a police vehicle in downtown Chattanooga, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Police were alerted around 8:27 a.m. that someone had gotten access to an ambulance at Erlanger hospital on East Third Street and fled the scene. Officers located the ambulance on North Holtzclaw Avenue and managed to stop it. As police tried to approach the ambulance, the male driver attempted to leave the scene and struck a police vehicle, a news release said.

The man was detained and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. An investigation is underway.
