Calhoun man swallows bag of drugs, dies

A Calhoun man died Tuesday morning after swallowing drugs before being arrested Monday night.

Matthew Duane Cobb, 28, of Dews Pond Road in Calhoun, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs after a deputy sheriff stopped him near U.S. 41/state Route 225, according to a news release from the Gordon County Sheriff's Office.

Cobb told officers at the scene that he'd swallowed a package of drugs before he was stopped, the release states. He was taken to the Gordon Hospital emergency room but later was released to the county jail.

He was observed overnight, but he complained to the jail staff about difficulty breathing early Tuesday morning. He was taken to the emergency room again and died a short time later, the release states.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted at the State Crime Laboratory, according to the release.
