Ready or not, Iowa

Five days.

That's how long the people of Iowa have before they pick a Republican to challenge President Barack Obama next November. Of course, they won't make that choice for the whole nation. The other states will hold primaries and caucuses in coming months, too.

But Iowa's position as the first state in the caucus and primary lineup gives it added importance. Front-runners can solidify their status, or dark horses can surprise the leaders.

Polls in Iowa have been remarkably fluid, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Ron Paul taking the lead at various times in recent weeks.

We don't know whom residents of Iowa will pick. But ready or not, that decision will be in their hands very shortly.
