Democrat bristles at 'deplorable' label

I recently received a postcard from the Catoosa County Republican Party that informed me that I was one of the "Deplorables of Georgia" for being a Democrat. Surely they realize that I am their neighbor, teach and coach their children, work with and for them, hire their children to mow my yard, stand in line with them at the store, and am even their friend.

We Democrats believe that Stacey Abrams will be a governor for all Georgia, protecting the water we drink, growing our economy in an equitable manner, improving our schools, and making certain that all Georgians have health care that includes coverage for pre-existing conditions.

We Democrats have made America great through responsible government, and I'm hoping that my Republican friends realize that when they turn on their TVA-powered lights, receive tuition benefits from the Georgia lottery, and yes, even send and read their mail from the United States Postal Service.

Put country first; vote for Bredesen

As a 60-year Republican, I am distressed by the choice that voters have to make in this year's election, especially in the race for the U.S. Senate. For those of us who believe that we must put our country ahead of our political party, for those of us who expect honesty, integrity and respect for others from our leaders, and especially from our president, this is a tough election.

We must admit that many of these sacred principles that we often take for granted are being violated on a daily basis. The division by race, religion and gender that we see in our country must be healed, and it is up to us to pick leaders who we believe will make that a primary goal. I believe that former Gov. Phil Bredesen will work to that end; that he will work to heal our divisions, not try to accentuate them for political gain. I encourage all who share in this objective to give him your vote and your support.

Liberal hatred condemns liberalism

World vermin, unite! We've nothing to lose but our Democrats: party of slavery and bureaucracy, of "irredeemable" and "bitter, they cling to guns or religion" and now "Vermin" (cartoon, Times page, Oct. 20), party of contempt, pride and hatred.

Cartoonist Luckovich makes "Vermin" his own word by how he uses it on Mr. Trump's shirt. Would Jesus use that word? He declared anyone who calls his brother "moron" deserves the Gehenna of the fire (hell). He always warned us sinners to repent rather than despising us as hopeless or calling sin righteousness. He came to save sinners, not to leave us sinning or write us off. Liberal hatred condemns liberalism.

Mr. Luckovich presents six "vermin" for us to disbelieve: murderous dictators Putin, Kim and crown prince bin Salman; President Trump; Roy Moore, who hasn't groped a teenager in 25 years, assuming he did back then; and Justice Kavanaugh, whose chief accuser can't be trusted about fear of flying or reasons for a second door, so why about him? Missing: President Obama, who interfered in Israeli and Brexit elections; President Clinton and the enabler who didn't enforce the "Pence rule" on him. Media bias again.
