Whitfield County Republican Chairman Chuck Payne has resigned.
Payne is becoming district coordinator of North Georgia for Dr. Ben Carson's campaign for President, according to a news release.
Payne first became involved in the local Republican party in 1991, the release said. Since that time, he has served as chairman on two separate occasions, 1998-2005 and his current term since 2013.
The decision to join Carson's campaign has been weeks in the making, Payne said.
"It is precisely Dr. Carson's display of courage and conviction which compels to the decision to step down as Chairman of the Whitfield County Republican Party and commit my best efforts to helping him win," he said in the release.
