Cleveland State basketball teams win at Chattanooga State

The Cleveland State basketball teams won both TCCAA games Saturday at Chattanooga State, 78-68 in the men's game and 85-82 in the women's contest.

Darrion Leslie led the Cougars' victory with 27 points and eight rebounds, going 8-of-11 from the field and 11-of-14 on free throws, and Lawrence Castor scored 23 points. Courtland Crutcher had seven assists and three steals. For Chattanooga State, Boban Jacdonmi scored 14 points, Larry Spicer had 13 points and nine rebounds and DaV Moore added 12 points.

The fifth-place Lady Tigers put a scare in the third-place visitors as Sydney Sims and Teondra Crawford scored 28 and 27 points, the latter making six of nine 3-point shots, but Cleveland State (17-4, 10-2) had four double-figure scorers, led by Leisa Butler with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. She also had 14 rebounds, seven on the offensive end, while Ny'Asia Holmes scored 13 points and Keke Smith and Kelsey Ivey had 11 apiece.

Jaclyn Griffith had eight rebounds as the Lady Cougars led 60-31 in that category.

' Lee 110, North Alabama 97: At Cleveland, the host Flames got hot and turned a 14-point deficit into a 19-point lead and ultimately a Gulf South victory. Lee (7-15, 5-12) shot 73.3 percent from the field in the second half and 62.9 percent for the game, while UNA (14-9, 11-6) shot 40 percent. Keevin Tyus was 11-for-14 from the field and had 29 points with seven rebounds for Lee, while Rico Overall was 7-of-9 (3-of-4 on 3s) and scored 23 points, Rantavious Gilbert was 8-of-10 and had 18 points with 10 rebounds and Levi Woods was 3-of-5 on 3s and totaled 14 points. Bryce Copeland had five assists.

' Lee (w) 75, North Alabama 73: The Lady Flames (16-6, 13-4) trailed for three-fourths of the game, by as many as 12 points, but led when it counted, led by Haris Price with 20 points and four assists and Christina Johnson with 15 rebounds (nine offensive) and 12 points. Erin Walsh had 14 points.

' Bryan 87, St. Andrews 60: At Laurinburg, N.C., Brandon Cole had 38 points and 15 rebounds in the Lions' comfortable Appalachian Athletic Conference win. He was 14-of-20 from the field and 10-of-10 on free throws. Oteriah Lee added 10 points for Bryan (11-11, 6-7).

' Bryan (w) 99, St. Andrews 61: The 25th-ranked Lady Lions (21-3, 13-2) kept St. Andrews winless in the AAC as Cheyenne Shaver had 19 points with four 3s and nine rebounds and Megan Billingsby and Kaylee Smith scored 14 points each.

' Tennessee Wesleyan (w) 77, Columbia 60: At Columbia, S.C., the Lady Bulldogs improved to 11-7 overall and 11-5 in the AAC.

' Auburn-Montgomery 81, Dalton State 70: At Montgomery, Ala., the Roadrunners lost the Southern States game despite 17 points and 10 rebounds from Jordan Bowling and 30 points combined from Marcel Hawkins (16) and Deshawn Ruffin. Jamaine Burrey and Reed Dungan scored 11 and 10.

' Ferrum 67, Covenant 61: On Lookout Mountain, the host Scots (12-8, 7-3) lost the USA South game despite 17 points from TJ Cox and 12 from Ben Phelps. Josh Grimard scored 14 for Ferrum (11-10, 6-4).

' Ferrum (w) 68, Covenant 65: Kemani Crawford paced the visitors with 21 points and four steals as they rose to 8-4 in the USA South. Joanna Smith had 22 points and five assists and Aleigha Williams had 15 points and seven steals for Covenant (7-12, 4-7), which trailed by 16 in the third quarter but pulled into a tie before falling.

' Sewanee 70, Millsaps 65: Friday night at Sewanee, the Tigers won the Southern Athletic Association game as Cody Jones had 19 points and eight rebounds. Clay Born scored 15 points, Keshonn Carter added 11, Jacob McCullough had eight assists with 10 points and Brody Stone grabbed 11 rebounds for the second-place Tigers (14-6, 7-2), who host SAA leader Birmingham-Southern this afternoon.

New Bryan team splits

The new Bryan men's volleyball team played its first matches Saturday and lost 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-10) to host Emmanuel but won 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9) over St. Andrews.

Will Stokes had 21 kills and 14 digs in the win, while Nick Scully had 32 assists and Nathan Shadoan had nine kills, 11 digs and seven aces.
