Around the Region: Sewanee sweeps SAA tennis titles again

The nationally ranked Sewanee tennis teams won Southern Athletic Association tournament championships Sunday in Arkansas, with the titles the fifth straight for both. The No. 16-ranked women beat Centre 5-1 in North Little Rock to give coach Conchie Shackelford her 550th victory, improve to 19-5 and earn an NCAA Division III tournament berth. Sewanee's Haley Tucker was selected tournament MVP, and teammate Darby Duval also made the all-tournament team. The No. 18 Sewanee men beat Millsaps 5-1 in Little Rock and are also NCAA tournament-bound with a 21-3 mark. Jack Gray earned MVP honors, with Jordan Brewer also in the all-tourney lineup.

Baseball

- Lee lost 12-1 to visiting Mississippi College on Sunday. Drew Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double for the Flames (24-20, 11-17 Gulf South Conference). The Choctaws are 18-22, 13-14.

- Sewanee lost 7-6 in 10 innings at Birmingham-Southern on Sunday. The Tigers (18-21, 8-12 SAA) scored five runs across the seventh and eighth to force the extra inning, but the Panthers (32-6, 19-2) won when a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jared Demkowicz, Drew Mancuso and Max Murray each had two hits for the Tigers, and Chris McNulty homered.

- Cleveland State lost 3-0 and 8-0 at No. 2-ranked Dyersburg State on Sunday, falling to 29-16 overall and 11-12 in the TCCAA. Cameron Payne was 2-for-3 in both losses and had a double in the second game.

Softball

- Rain postponed Sunday's scheduled SAA tournament final at Warner Park, with nationally third-ranked Berry College (37-2) and Millsaps (26-14) set to play next Sunday, with the time and location not set. Berry edged the Majors 2-1 on Saturday as pitcher Marie Collop allowed three hits in six innings and went 2-for-3 with a two-run first-inning double. Whitney Gribble from Murray County got the last three outs for a save.

- Limited by a sore knee, Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton had a pinch-hit single in the winning rally in each of Brenau University's 3-2 softball victories last week, against Faulkner and Coastal Georgia. Catcher Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy began the three-run sixth inning against Coastal by reaching base on an error, and the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Golden Tigers completed a 26-0 Southern States Athletic Conference regular season. They'll take a 47-5 overall record into the SSAC tournament Thursday in Decatur, Ala. Payne has a .368 batting average and 35 RBIs; Moore is hitting .290 with 29 RBIs.

Track & Field

- Dalton State College's Emily Poole in the 5000-meter run (18:27.48) and Ana Karen Padilla in the 10k (45:52.99) won women's championships at the SSAC outdoor track and field meet this past weekend in Mobile, Ala., and Nayeli Jacobo was second in the 1500 and third in the 5000. DSC's Ryan Gebelstein (35:33.74) was the men's 10,000 winner with Devin Swafford third, and Cole Thompson finished fifth in the 1500. Dalton State participated only in distance races.

- Sewanee's Will DuBose won pole vault at 13 feet, 5 inches, Ridge Davis won men's javelin at 179-2 and Ash Midyett won the men's 800 in 1:55:52 in the SAA meet this past weekend at Berry College, and the Tigers' Logan Stockton and Mark McAlister were fifth in the 5k and 10k, respectively. Sewanee's L'Or Puymartin was fourth in the women's steeple. Rhodes' Will Raines from Baylor School was fouth in the men's 400.

Sailing

- With inclement weather preventing sailing at Chickamauga Lake on Sunday, the final day of the Choo Choo Flying Scot Regatta hosted by Privateer Yacht Club was canceled, leaving Saturday's results as the final standings. That made Chattanooga's Scott Cline and Rob Fowler first, Mark and Michele Taylor of Tampa, Fla., second and Ryan and Stacy Malmgren of Madison, Wis., third in the 29-team competition.
