UTC linebacker Joshua Phillips joins basketball team

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team added Joshua Phillips to its 2017-18 roster Friday.

The 6-foot-8, 245-pound senior played three seasons at Middle Tennessee State, totaling 83 points, 107 rebounds and 15 blocks in 401 minutes. He was a member of the 2015-16 Blue Raiders, who upset No. 2 Michigan State and advanced to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16.

After that season, he transferred to play football at UTC, where in two seasons the linebacker finished with 11 tackles, including two for loss, and a pair of quarterback hurries. Phillips was an all-state basketball player in high school at Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville, Tenn.

The addition of Phillips is expected to help the Mocs' interior. Not counting Phillips, the team's only available post players are junior Makinde London (6-10) and freshmen A.J. Bowers (6-5), James Lewis Jr. (6-6) and Duane Moss (6-6). Bowers is a walk-on.

Phillips will be available tonight when the Mocs (2-3) host NAIA member Tennessee Wesleyan (3-6) at 7 at McKenzie Arena.
