Area Sports Notes: UTC's Keiana Gilbert adds SoCon honor

Even not counting her 27-point performance at Indiana on Nov. 20 that helped her be named Monday the College Sports Madness player of the week for the Southern Conference, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Keiana Gilbert was named Tuesday the SoCon women's basketball player of the week for games of Nov. 21-27. She totaled 41 points and 20 rebounds in three weekend wins in the Challenge in Music City and was voted the event's most valuable player. She shot 53 percent from the field in Nashville.

» The Bryan College basketball teams both won at home Tuesday in Appalachian Athletic Conference games against Bluefield. The Lady Lions won 69-57 before the Lions prevailed 64-62 as Oteriah Lee provided 17 points and six assists and Brice Cusick and Caleb Tuck scored 13 points each. Karli Combs scored 22 on 6-of-11 3-point shooting for the Lady Lions, who got 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Deandra Luna.

» The Sewanee women's basketball team wiped out a 16-point deficit to take visiting Emory to overtime but ultimately fell 84-80 on Tuesday. Bella Taylor scored 15 points in the fourth period and 29 for the game for Sewanee (2-3), with seven rebounds and four steals. Hannah McCormack had 16 points and five steals, and Allison Hitchcock scored 14 points. The Eagles are 4-1.

» Birmingham-Southern's women edged visiting Covenant 73-69 as Emilee Olsen had 27 points, seven rebounds and four steals on Tuesday for the Lady Panthers (2-2). Joanna Smith had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Covenant (1-3), which got 12 points each from Taylor Robinson and Bekah Walter with seven rebounds from Robinson.

Soccer

» Tennessee Wesleyan trounced The Master's 3-0 on Tuesday in the NAIA women's soccer tournament at Orange Beach, Fla., as Nicole Broderick and Dayna Randall scored in the first 16 minutes and Chloe Rootes added a last-minute score from a Karla Martinez assist. TWU goalkeeper McKenna Loges made nine saves. The Lady Bulldogs (15-4-2) play tonight against No. 3 seed Northwestern Ohio.

Golf

» Cade Puryear from Riceville and Walker Valley High School was one of three November men's golf signees announced Tuesday by Tennessee Tech. The others were Bryce Beeler from Maryville High and Chance Taylor from Gate City High in Virginia. Puryear helped lead Walker Valley to district and region championships the past three seasons and was the districit and region medalist as a senior this past fall. He won the Egwani Farms Junior Invitational in 2016. "Cade has family ties here at Tech, given that his father played football here," Golden Eagles coach Polk Brown said in a TTU release. "Although he will be here for golf, it is exciting to see that lineage continue, starting in the fall. He has a tremendous desire to work and improve every day."

Volleyball

» The Covenant College volleyball team not only won the USA South championship this fall but also earned the league's sportsmanship award for the sport for the third season in a row. Joanna Ehman is the Lady Scots' coach. Maryville won for men's soccer, William Peace for women's soccer and Ferrum for football, the league office announced Tuesday.

General

» Covenant athletic director Tim Sceggel announced Tuesday the establishment of the Scots Athletic Club as a booster group for the school's 14 intercollegiate teams. The club is intended to be a focal point for raising funds and otherwise helping "to promote, sustain and develop Covenant athletics," according to the school release. "We invite you to join us in this pursuit as our coaches use their sport as a means to grow student athletes in their faith, while also achieving strong results in the midst of competition," Sceggel said in the release. "We are excited to provide a structured way for alumni, community members, parents and other friends of the athletic department to contribute in a way that supports the mission and vision of the athletic department by meeting prioritized team and departmental needs."
