The sixth annual class of inductees for the Central High School Sports Hall of Fame was announced Thursday by the school's alumni association, and it's an accomplished group of seven. Listed alphabetically, they are Kinny Choate (class of 1968), who played baseball in the New York Yankees organization; Jay Garrett ('74), who played four sports at Central and football at Georgia Tech; Grover Masterson ('47), who boxed collegiately at Virginia; Denny Painter ('67), who played three sports in high school and football at Vanderbilt; Quineth Roberts ('57), who played baseball for Auburn and the Detroit Tigers; football coach Jake Seaton, who worked with Purple Pounders from 1945 to 1974; and Larry White ('65), who played golf for three NCAA championship teams at Houston. Masterson and Seaton will be inducted posthumously. The inductees will be honored Sept. 28 at the Harrison school, during a 5:30 p.m. barbecue dinner and at halftime of that night's football game against Howard. Tickets to the dinner cost $5 and can be bought at the school office.

Fishing

* John Murray of Spring City was 15th with 23 pounds, 13 ounces after the first day of the Bassmaster Elite tournament on the St. Lawrence River at Waddington, New York. Matt Lee of Guntersville, Alabama, jumped ahead Thursday with 27-12, and David Walker of Sevierville was second at 26-8. Another Spring City resident, Wesley Strader, was 48th with 20-5 in the tightly packed field, and Jacob Wheeler of Harrison was 75th with 17-12.

Golf

* St. Andrew's-Sewanee graduate Jenna Burris of Manchester was delighted not only with her third Tennessee Women's Four-Ball Championship in four years Wednesday with Hanley Long but also with what the tournament showed about their Middle Tennessee State University team. The two Blue Raiders seniors won the 36-hole event in Gallatin by two strokes over another set of MTSU players, sisters Caroline and Catherine Caudill of Clarksville, and MTSU's Savannah Quick from Manchester was third with her sister, Tullahoma High School senior Ashley Gilliam. "This shows how much potential we have for the upcoming college season," Burris said in a Tennessee Golf Association release. "Not just us but our teammates as well." She and Long not only were the first duo to win the Women's Four-Ball three times as a team, but they set tournament records for lowest round (60), lowest opening round, lowest 36-hole score (124) and lost 36-hole score in relation to par (20 under).

Soccer

* The Tennessee Wesleyan women's soccer team, ranked 15th in the NAIA preseason poll, lost its season opener 4-0 Thursday at No. 19 Cumberland in Lebanon, Tennessee. Rebecca Holloway scored three goals for the Phoenix, who outshot TWU 24-11, 9-4 on goal.

Cross Country

* Both Covenant College cross country teams coached by Katie Stanford were picked to finish second in the USA South this fall, each behind defending champion Berea. The Kentucky school got 11 of 12 first-place votes in the coaches' men's balloting and 12 of 17 in the women's, and Covenant got the rest. Stanford's Scots and Lady Scots were runners-up in the league meet last year and return most of their top competitors, including USAS women's runner of the year Lilly Smith and men's rookie of the year Caleb Aikens. Covenant hosts its season-opening Mountaintop Invitational next Friday evening.

* Dalton State was predicted to finish third in Southern States Athletic Conference women's cross country. Blue Mountain got eight first-place votes and 117 points from the league coaches, and William Carey got the other three firsts and 112 points to 97 for DSC and 87 for fourth-place Loyola of New Orleans.

Tennis

* Former Tennessee Wesleyan standout Brad Bolton from Chattanooga is now an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Centre College. He has worked at tennis clubs in Destin, Florida, and Atlanta and most recently as a teaching pro at Manker Patten in Chattanooga. "He has been very successful at the club level working with elite juniors," Centre head coach Currie Martin said in a release. "Brad's natural ability to connect with players on a personal level will have an immediate impact on our recruiting."
