Sewanee basketball teams split Southern Athletic doubleheader at home

Sewanee split a Southern Athletic Association basketball doubleheader against visiting Birmingham-Southern on Sunday, with the Sewanee men winning 80-63 and the Sewanee women losing 77-73 in overtime.

In the men's game, Luke Smith had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers (6-6, 3-0), while Hunter Buescher added 15 points and five assists and Adrian Thomas finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals to help stop the Panthers (8-6, 2-1). Smith shot 9-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-7 from behind the arc as the Tigers went 15-for-30 from 3-point range. Sewanee, which led 44-27 at halftime, took just four free throws and made three.

In the women's game, which was tied at 62 after the fourth quarter, Bella Taylor had 19 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists to pace the Tigers (4-8, 0-3). Hannah McCormack added 17 points, Allison Hitchcock 15 points, and Sue Kim 12 points and six assists. Christian McGowan scored 26 to lead Birmingham-Southern (8-6, 2-1).
