Area Sports Notes: Carnilious Simmons has 25 points, 25 rebounds in Dalton State win

Carnilious Simmons regularly has been posting double-doubles since resuming his Dalton State basketball career after the first semester, but he outdid himself Tuesday night. He had 25 points, 25 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 74-65 Southern States Athletic Conference home win over Blue Mountain. Nine of his rebounds were on the offensive backboards. Reed Dungan added 20 points with three 3-point baskets for the Roadrunners (12-4, 5-1), and Isaiah Box had 12 points and four assists.

» The Sewanee women's basketball team beat Welch 77-60 on the road Tuesday with Hannah McCormack scoring 24 points and Bella Taylor and Allison Hitchcock adding 17 and 16. Taylor also had five assists and McCormack made three steals for the Tigers (5-8). The Sewanee men won 83-63 at Boyce in Louisville, Ky., and are 7-6.

» Despite 17 points and 18 rebounds for Joanna Smith and 15 points from Bekah Walter, the Covenant women lost 71-51 to visiting Piedmont in their USA South game Tuesday. Smith was 7-for-10 from the field, but the Lady Scots (5-8, 1-3) shot only 30.6 percent as a team. Amari Price and Carlie Shields had 20 and 17 points and four assists apiece for Piedmont (12-2, 4-1).

» Lee University guard Maddie Long was selected the Gulf South Conference women's basketball freshman of the week after scoring a team-high 14 points in the Lady Flames' 60-51 win last Thursday against West Florida. She was 5-for-6 from the field and had four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. "Maddie stepped up big for us tonight," coach Marty Rowe said after the game, "and we need her to play like that off the bench in order to be at our best." The Lee teams play tonight at West Alabama.

Academics

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletes posted an overall grade point average of 3.062 on a 4.0 scale in the fall semester, the school reported Tuesday. It was the eighth consecutive term the Mocs as a group exceeded 3.0. "Our student-athletes have set the bar very high when it comes to success in the classroom," vice chancellor and athletic director Mark Wharton said in the announcement release. "Our numbers from the fall exemplify this commitment to excellence in academics shown by everyone involved with our program." A school-record 43 athletes had 4.0s for the semester, including eight from the women's cross country and track and field rosters, seven from soccer, five each from football and wrestling and four from men's cross country. Women's golf led the school's teams with a program-record 3.83, and volleyball at 3.60 and men's basketball at 2.83 also set or tied program bests. Men's cross country had a 3.64, soccer a 3.59, women's cross country 3.51, women's tennis 3.41, women's t rack 3.31, softball 3.17, women's basketball 3.04 and wrestling 3.03.
