Former Georgia Southern head football coach Tyson Summers has been helping Georgia in recruiting, but his role in Kirby Smart's program remains publicly unknown.
Summers and Smart worked together at Georgia in 2005, when the Bulldogs won their most recent Southeastern Conference championship before this past season. Smart was in his one season as running backs coach for Mark Richt, while Summers was a graduate assistant.
Calhoun High School coach Hal Lamb posted Thursday night on Twitter that it was "great catching up with Tyson Summers at the basketball game" and then thanked Smart for "checking on our guys."
Friday morning, it was Darlington coach Tommy Atha's turn to recognize Summers in his new locale.
"It was great having Tyson Summers from UGA visit this morning," Atha posted on Twitter. "Always good to have the Dawgs on campus at the Lakeside!"
Summers was Colorado State's defensive coordinator in 2015 under Mike Bobo and got his first career head-coaching opportunity at Georgia Southern in 2016, leading the Eagles to opening wins over Savannah State, South Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe. That 3-0 start, however, gave way to a disappointing 5-7 final record, and his 2017 team started out with an 0-6 mark that included a loss to New Hampshire.
Georgia Southern then fired Summers, who was 5-13.
Gibbs status unsure
Georgia defensive back Deangelo Gibbs is not enrolled for the spring semester, and his status on the team is in question. Gibbs was an ESPN and Scout.com five-star prospect in the 2017 signing class out of Oxford, Ga., and enrolled last January.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder appeared in six games this past season and made three tackles, but he did not play after Georgia's win over Florida and did not make trips to the Rose Bowl and the national championship game.
