Area sports notes: UTC women's soccer team loses 1-0 at Furman

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team lost 1-0 to Furman on Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina, with the 2017 regular-season champion winning for the first time in four Southern Conference matches this season. Erin Houlihan scored in the 39th minute on Stephanie Arrington's assist - she slipped a shot between goalkeeper Ashton Shields' legs - as the Paladins (6-5) handed the Mocs their first SoCon loss of 2018. UTC (6-5-2, 2-1-1) was outshot 17-8 overall and 7-3 on goal, and Furman also had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Shields made five saves while splitting time in goal with Melia Correa, who made one stop. Furman's Kellsey Weaver had three saves to earn the shutout in goal. UTC returns to competition Friday with a 7 p.m. match against Western Carolina at Finley Stadium, then hosts East Tennessee State University at 2 p.m. Sunday.

* Lee University split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Mississippi College, with the Flames winning 3-1 and the Lady Flames falling by the same score. The Lee men (6-2-1, 5-0) ran their winning streak to five matches with two goals from Samaan Williams and another from Alfie Coldron, who scored in the 12th minute before assisting Williams in the 25th minute. Williams' second goal was in the 81st minute on Palle Jespersen's assist after the Choctaws (5-3, 3-2) closed the gap to 2-1 on Connor Johnson's penalty kick in the 79th. Jose Orellena also had an assist, and Daniel Hrenko made three saves for the Flames. Mississippi College edged Lee in overall shots 13-10, but the Flames had an 8-4 advantage on goal. The Choctaws took four corner kicks to Lee's three. In the women's match, with Lee down 3-0, junior forward Riley Engels scored in the 83rd minute for her first goal of the season. The Lady Flames (6-3-1, 3-2) were outshot 20-10 overall and 11-4 on goal, but they had a 5-4 advantage against Mississippi College (7-1, 5-0) in corner kicks. Lee's Taylor Green made eight saves.

Volleyball

* Sewanee was swept in a Southern Athletic Association match Sunday at Birmingham-Southern, with the set scores 25-16, 25-18, 25-14. The Tigers (13-4, 4-3) were led by Constance Connolly (23 assists, six digs), Destiny Stewart (eight kills, eight digs), Peyton Parent (18 digs), Lilly Reilly (seven digs, five kills), Stephanie Price (six kills, three blocks) and Ellie Pedersen (four block assists). Reilly Vought had 32 assists, Caroline Johnson 24 digs and Jeneva Salter 11 kills for Birmingham-Southern (11-5, 5-2).

Field Hockey

* Sewanee's winning streak ended after six matches with a 2-0 loss Sunday at DePauw. Maddie Little in the fourth minute and Kate Milner in the ninth minute, both on assists from Cathy Zesiger, provided the goals for DePauw (5-4), which took 10 shots and got one save from Allie Duranceau. Sewanee (6-2) took just four shots, and Rachel Blum made five saves.

Running

* The Berry College women and Oglethorpe men won the Sewanee Invitational cross country meet Saturday with 16 and 25 points, and the host Tigers were second out of five women's teams and fourth out of five men's. Sewanee's Avery Jordan was seventh in the women's 6-kilometer race, with teammates Maren Czura, Meg Legro and Ann Chapman Haynes 13th, 15th and 16th. Sewanee's Jack Barganier, Ash Midyett and Bram Atkins were 13th, 17th and 18th in the 8k.

* Tennessee Wesleyan teammates Bree Bogucki and Rachel Gallison finished 32nd and 33rd in the collegiate women's third-level silver race of the Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday, and the Lady Bulldogs were 13th out of 53 silver teams. The Tennessee Wesleyan men competed in the second-level blue race and were 33rd among 45 teams, with Romeo Blackburn 68th among 412 runners. As reported Sunday, Lee's women and men finished 15th and 18th in the gold division, where UTC's women and men were 18th and 24th.
