Area sports notes: UTC hosting C Club reunion on Oct. 26

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is hosting a C Club Alumni Reunion as part of this year's homecoming weekend. All former Mocs letter winners and their immediate families are invited to meet and enjoy light refreshments in McKenzie Arena on Friday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Then at 7 at nearby Maclellan Gymnasium there will be a special presentation for the 1998 volleyball team that won the Southern Conference championship. Also, the letter winners and their families are invited to a C Club tailgate Saturday, Oct. 27, beginning at 11 a.m. in the First Tennessee Pavilion before the football game against VMI. Each C Club member will receive four complimentary tickets to the game. The weekend will include recognition of UTC conference-title teams in all sports for 1968-69, 1978-79, 1988-89, 1998-99 and 2008-09.

Golf

' With a balanced performance led by a 74 from Foster Wood, Signal Mountain took the first-day lead Tuesday in the Small Class boys' golf state tournament at the WillowBrook course at Manchester. The Eagles combined for an 18-over-par 306, two strokes better than Alcoa, which got a first-place 69 from Braedon Wear. Cascade was third at 314 going into today's final round. Also for Signal Mountain, Beck Lewis shot 76 and Benjamin Burns and Ben Seay had 78s. McMinn Central's John Houk was tied with Wood for seventh in the players' standings, and teammate Bradley Dunkle shot 79. In the girls' tournament, defending champion Lindsey Hollis of Signal shared the individual lead at 75, and Sale Creek's Hannah Holland was fifth at 79 with the Lady Panthers third at 171, behind Summertown (158) and L&N STEM (170).

' Georgia Northwestern finished fifth at 593 after Tuesday's 5-over-par 293 in the USCAA men's golf national tournament at Penn State University. The Bobcats were three shots out of third. Freshman Noah Hankins earned second-team All-America status with a 146, and Spencer Alexander missed by just one shot, tying for 16th at 147. Lane Strickland tied for 20th at 149, and Ryan Redd and Cole Roberts shot 152 and 156. St. Mary of the Woods was the team champion with a tourney-record 569.

Volleyball

' Cleveland High School graduate Kellee Geren totaled 38 assists as first-place Milligan College beat second-place and visiting Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference North Division volleyball Tuesday evening, by the set scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Milligan is 17-4, 10-2 in league play. Marjorie Smith had nine kills and Sydney Ritten had seven for Wesleyan (12-13, 8-4), while setter Gabi Catt had 22 assists and Sovanna Ramirez and Madison Weir had 13 and 10 digs.

' Georgia Northwestern's volleyball team improved to 6-13 with a 3-0 home win (25-21, 25-9, 25-20) Monday night against the Covenant College junior varsity. Savannah Walker and Mia Clark each had six kills and Kayleigh Goff had seven assists in the win. Morgen Simmons served four aces.

Soccer

' Michael Torner's header goal off Brad Spooner's corner kick almost four minutes into the match held up as a 1-0 NAIA nonconference win for the Bryan College men's soccer team Tuesday against visiting Georgia Gwinnett. With shots at a premium, goalkeeper Alex Horton had four saves in the shutout for the Lions (7-4-2). The Grizzlies had slim 9-8 and 4-3 edges in shots and shots on goal, and corners were 4-4. Bryan's women tied 1-1 through two overtimes in an AAC match at Brenau. Summer Ghaffari scored the equalizer for the Lady Lions (5-7-1, 4-3-1) in the second half.

' Kailey Burrell scored twice in the first 7:05 and added a second-half assist for Addy Cronan as Covenant beat visiting Berea 5-0 in USA South women's soccer Tuesday. Kyra Duble and Megan Rasku scored later and Lizzy Hightower and Paige Simons also had assists for the Lady Scots (6-6-1, 3-2), who had margins of 23-7 in shots, 15-5 in on-goal attempts and 9-1 in corner kicks. Rachel Lemay made five saves in the shutout.
