Area sports notes: Soccer Mocs outshoot Samford but lose 2-0

Samford remained undefeated in Southern Conference women's soccer this season with a 2-0 win Friday night against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga at Finley Stadium. Erin Bonner and Caroline Orman scored early in the second half, the latter from an Ella Baggett pass, for the Bulldogs (9-5-1, 6-0-1), who were outshot 8-7 - and 5-2 on goal - by the Mocs (8-6-2, 4-2-1).

' Lee University lost 3-2 in two overtimes to the Christian Brothers women and tied the CBU men 2-2 in Gulf South Conference soccer in Cleveland. All the scoring in the women's game was after halftime, and Kelsey Yoder with a penalty kick and Riley Engels with an unassisted goal gave Lee (7-5-1, 4-4) two leads before Sinead Tierney and Bailey Tadlock each paired a goal with an assist to lift CBU (6-4-1, 5-3) to victory. The Lady Flames lost despite advantages of 25-15 in shots and 14-8 in shots on goal. For the Flames (7-3-3, 5-1-2), who led 21-12 in shots, Jose Orellana headed in a Samir Williams cross at 76:34 and Alfie Coldron netted a direct kick at 82:40.

' Addy Cronan's unassisted goal 4:20 into overtime gave Covenant College a 2-1 USA South women's home win over Huntingdon. Huntingdon (6-5-3, 4-2) had a rebound score five minutes into the game, but the Lady Scots (7-6-1, 4-2) equalized on Lizzy Hightower's 19-yard blast in the 78th minute. Covenant led 16-6 in shots and 6-1 in corners.

' Sewanee's women won 2-1 in overtime but the men fell 1-0 to visiting Birmingham-Southern in their Southern Athletic Association doubleheader. Caitlin Fahr gave Sewanee's women (5-9-2, 2-3) an early lead from a Kiera Giacomini assist and crossed to Nika Gorski for the winning goal at 91:53. The hosts led 17-8 in shots and 8-2 in corners. The Sewanee men (5-7-1, 1-4) lost despite leading 21-6 in shots, 7-2 in corners.

Tennis

' UTC junior Niklas Gerdes won twice in singles Friday to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville. After losing 8-7 in a tiebreaker with Simon Bustamante in main-draw doubles, Gerdes edged No. 5 seed Jordan Benjamin of Dayton 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 26th seed Theo McDonald of Kentucky 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2). Tennessee's Scott Jones, seeded seventh, topped UTC freshman Tomas Rodriguez 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Volleyball

' With 29 kills and 12 digs from Silvia Sartori and 52 assists and 12 digs from Hanna Matthews, Lee University beat visiting Mississippi College 3-1 in GSC volleyball Friday night, by the set scores of 17-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15. Allie Koepfer and MaKayla Beebe had 22 digs apiece and Alex Reuter and Mary Katherine Givhan had 11 and eight kills for Lee (10-11, 8-2). Reuter had seven block assists and a block solo.

' Hannah Harris and Alexa Spurling had 15 kills apiece, Sara Delk added 13 with 18 digs and Sophie Puertas contributed 48 assists and 14 digs as host Covenant pulled out a 3-2 (25-17, 16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-11) USAS win over Maryville. Emily Moore and Hannah Stewart had 23 and 21 digs for Covenant (9-10, 7-1).

' North Division leader Milligan (18-4, 11-2) beat visiting Bryan 3-0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-19) in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball, as Cleveland High School graduate Kellee Geren registered 48 assists and 11 digs. Veronica Salas and Sidney Pierce had 11 and 10 assists for Bryan (9-14, 5-8).

Swimming

' The Sewanee swimming and diving teams opened their 2018-19 season Thursday night with a 128-99 men's loss and a 143-82 women's loss to visiting Centre. For the Sewanee men, Carl Failing, Lee Haber, James Hoyt and Anthony Carbone won the 200-yard medley relay, freshman Carbone won the 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle, Haber won the 200 individual medley and the 500 free, Hoyt won the 1000 free and Failing won the 50 free. For the Sewanee women, Kate Mabry, Gabby Acker, Bonnie Wakefield and Annie Heller won the 200 medley relay, freshman Mabry won the 200 IM and the 200 backstroke, classmate Acker won the 200 breast and Noel Whitlock won 1- and 3-meter diving.
