Area sports notes: Baylor School boys win national swim title

For the third time but the first since 2009, the Baylor School boys' swimming and diving team was recognized by Swimming World Magazine as the independent high school national champion for the 2017-18 season. The Red Raiders' championships go with independent school national titles for the Baylor girls in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The Lady Raiders also were overall national champions in 2012. Harpeth Hall from Nashville had that distinction for 2018, along with the North Allegheny boys from Pennsylvania.

Golf

» With Ryann McCuistion the individual winner by five strokes, the Tennessee Wesleyan women's golf team added a 303 Wednesday to its first-day 302 and rose from a tie for second place to the championship of the SCAD Atlanta Fall Invitational tournament at Covington, Georgia. SCAD Atlanta finished second at 607 in the nine-team event at The Oaks club, with Faulkner third at 616, Northwestern Ohio fourth at 617 and Brenau fifth at 620. Bryan College was ninth. Wesleyan's McCuistion shot 139, and teammates Kelsey Cassada and Saylem Powell tied for eighth and 12th at 153 and 155 with Megan Schauer sharing 22nd at 158. Bryan's Taylor Williams and Daniella Banda tied for 30th with 164s.

Soccer

» The Lee University men's soccer team tied Lincoln Memorial 1-1 through two overtime periods Wednesday at Harrogate, Tennessee, and takes a 1-1-1 record into its home opener Saturday at 5 p.m. against Bellarmine. A women's match will follow with Lee hosting Carson-Newman. At LMU (1-0-1), the shots were even at 15-15 and Lee's Jared McWhorter scored from a Matt Chartier pass at 74:07, two and a half minutes before the Railsplitters' Christopher Willemsen scored from a double assist.

» Led by three goals from Andrea Lopez, including the first two, Dalton State College won 7-1 in women's soccer at Talladega eight days after beating the Tornadoes 9-0 at home. Alondra Salaises scored twice, Adriana Romero assisted Lopez twice and Jacqueline Tapia had a goal and an assist for DSC (4-0).

» Lexie Hill's unassisted goal with nine minutes to go in regulation gave Maryville College a 2-1 women's soccer home victory Wednesday night against longtime coach Pepe Fernandez's alma mater, Tennessee Wesleyan. TWU (0-3) took a lead at 4:47 on a Lauren Cunningham goal, but Bailey Sipos equalized for Maryville (2-2) less than nine minutes later and the goalkeepers took over from there. Abbey Coleman had nine saves for the winners and Lauren Teal had eight for TWU, which had a 16-7 shots lead in the first half but an 18-5 deficit in the second.

Field Hockey

» One day after being honored as the Southern Athletic Association field hockey offensive player of the week, Sewanee forward Ceara Caffrey was given national honorable mention by the Field Hockey Coaches Association on Wednesday. She scored five goals in two weekend matches.

Volleyball

» Sewanee's Destiny Stewart had 11 kills and 13 digs and Lilly Reilly also had 11 kills as the volleyball Tigers beat visiting Covenant 3-0 in an NCAA Division III match Tuesday night. The set scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-23. Constance Connolly contributed 32 assists, 11 digs and six kills for Sewanee (4-1), while Olivia Nichols led with 15 digs, Sydney White had 12 digs with seven kills and Ellie Pederson added eight kills. For Covenant (0-4), Alexa Spurling had eight kills and Sophie Puertas had 13 assists.
