Area sports notes: Quarterfinals, senior semis set for Chattanooga TPC

Jimmy White edged No. 1 seed Cody Godfrey 2 and 1 on Friday and will be a Chattanooga TPC quarterfinalist this afternoon at Council Fire Golf Club along with Jeff Greeson, Jay Potter, Mikey Feher, Matt Crowder, Chase Deck, Cres Dodd and Taylor Lewis. The Senior TPC semifinals are set with Bob Rice against Randy Yoder and Scott Patton against Pat Corey. Rice got past Neil Spitalny with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

' Signal Mountain won the boys' title and finished second by four strokes to Sale Creek in the high school District 6 Small tournament Friday at Brainerd Golf Course. Two players in each division shot 71s, with Signal's Foster Wood and Lindsey Hollis earning medalist honors after tying fellow Eagle Wesley Portera and Sale Creek's Ashley Holland. Hannah Holland added a 74 in the Lady Panthers' team win, trumping the 78 for Signal's April Weaver. Benjamin Burns and Ben Seay added 72s in the balanced Eagles' 286.

Fishing

' Jacob Wheeler of Harrison remained second to Oklahoma resident James Elam in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship tournament on Lake Chatuge after each weighed more than 16 pounds Friday at Hiawassee, Georgia. Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Alabama, takes a hefty 47-point lead in the Elite Series season standings into Sunday's final round. The 50 AOY contenders will take today off for the Elite Expo at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Wheeler is eighth in points, 13 out of seventh. His two-day total is 31 pounds, 5 ounces; Elam has 33-8; Lucas is fifth at 27-2; Wesley Strader of Spring City is 46th at 13-12.

Soccer

' The UTC and Mercer women's soccer teams tied 1-1 in their Southern Conference opener Friday night at Finley Stadium. Both goals came in the first half, Jordan Mueller from a Chloe Arnold assist on a corner kick for UTC (4-4-2). Ashton Shields had eight saves.

' Lee University hosted Auburn-Montgomery in Gulf South soccer and won the men's game 1-0 and the women's 7-2. Alfie Coldron netted a Jose Orellano pass 40 minutes into the game for the Flames (4-2-1, 2-0), who had margins of 20-11 in shots and 12-1 in corner kicks and got six saves from Daniel Hrenko. For the 19th-ranked Lady Flames (5-1-1, 2-0), who outshot AUM 34-10, Mia Hollingsworth scored twice in the first 12 minutes and Lauren Weimer, Kelsey Yoder, Riley Engels, Emma Higgins and Kate Carney also scored. Carly Smoltz and Anna Lanter each had two assists.

' Covenant College and Averett played to a 0-0 draw in USA South men's soccer on Lookout Mountain. Paul Lemay had six saves for Covenant (6-2-1, 3-0-1), which led 28-15 in shots and 9-3 in corner kicks.

' Sewanee's SAA openers resulted in a 4-1 women's loss and a 4-3 men's overtime loss at Berry. Carter Cooper scored from a Dayla LaRocque assist for the female Tigers (0-7-2). Drew Zolper, Kyle Johnston and Thompson Schollaert (from Ben Vaeth) scored for the Sewanee men (4-3).

Volleyball

' The UTC volleyball team began SoCon play Friday with a come-from-behind 3-2 home win over Wofford. The set scores were 18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-9. Gylian Finch had 16 kills and 10 digs, Ally Ford 13 kills and four aces and Jaquelyn Langhaim 42 assists and 10 digs for the Mocs (5-9), who got 13 and 11 digs from Megan Kaufman and Bailey Bennett and eight and seven kills from Mikaela Gauthreaux and Dani Szczepanski. Emily Plumlee had three block solos and two block assists.

' Silvia Sartori had 33 kills and 15 digs and Hanna Matthews had 53 assists and 13 digs as Lee rose to 4-0 in the GSC, 6-8 overall, with a 3-2 win (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13) at 13-3 Alabama-Huntsville. Alex Reuter and Bailey Kress had 10 kills apiece and MaKayla Beebe and Allie Koepfer had 24 and 18 digs.

' Savannah Walker had 14 kills and six blocks, Summer Fitzpatrick 11 kills and eight aces and Mia Clark 29 assists in Georgia Northwestern's 3-2 win over the Covenant junior varsity Thursday. Kayleigh Goff added seven kills for GNTC (3-9).
