Area sports notes: Golf Mocs sixth in Florida tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is in sixth place at 584 after a 290 second round Monday in the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Florida. The Mocs are nine shots ahead of seventh-place Boston College in the 13-team field headed by host UNC Greensboro at 566. Oliver Simonsen led the Mocs with a 3-under par 69 - his seventh round in the 60s this school year - and is tied for sixth individually at 143. Connor Nolan shot 70 and is tied for 23rd at 146, one shot ahead of Leon Bader in a tie for 28th. Etienne Brault and Moritz Lammel are at 150 and Lake Johnson is at 151. Lammel and Johnson are in the event as individuals.

Softball/Baseball

* UTC had both the player and the pitcher of the week in the Southern Conference's first 2019 installment of the softball honors, with junior outfielder Aly Walker and junior hurler Celie Hudson. As the Mocs opened their season by going 5-0 in Kennesaw State's tournament, Walker - the SoCon's preseason player of the year - was 9-for-17 (.529) with four doubles, three walks, six runs batted in and seven scored. Hudson pitched a three-hitter and a one-hitter and struck out 18 batters while allowing just three runs in three appearances totaling 14 innings. UTC hosts the Chattanooga Challenge this weekend, starting Friday.

* Harding University edged Lee University 3-2 with each team collecting seven hits Sunday in the last day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. Lily Hatcher was 2-for-2 and scored a run for Lee (6-4), and Kiley Longmire had an RBI.

* Sewanee lost 6-4 and 12-4 in its season-opening softball doubleheader at Wesleyan in Macon, Georgia. Taylor Wagner had two hits in each loss for the Tigers and scored two runs, while Rachel Hoffman totaled three hits and three RBIs.

* Sewanee's baseball team lost Sunday to the host team, 6-1, after winning its first two games in Huntingdon's season-opening Firehouse Classic in Montgomery. Trey Akins was 2-for-4 and Riley Brandvold had the RBI for the Tigers.

Basketball

* Dalton State College defeated visiting Martin Methodist 75-69 in Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball Monday night. Randy Bell paced DSC's Roadrunners (16-10, 11-7) with 22 points and six assists and added six rebounds, while Sean Cranney had 18 points and four assists and Sean Chislom contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds. Elijah Staley scored 10 points. Former Cleveland State player Jordan Olison with 11 was one of four double-digit scorers for Martin (9-15, 6-12).

* Sewanee sophomore guard Luke Smith is the Southern Athletic Association men's basketball player of week for the third time this season after scoring 20 and 21 points in the Tigers' weekend games. He totaled six steals and six assists. Smith leads the league with 19.2 points per game.
