Area sports notes: Lee basketball teams sweep Christian Brothers

The Lee University women's basketball team followed its Thursday win at nationally top-ranked Union University with a 77-55 Gulf South Conference victory Saturday at Christian Brothers in Memphis, and the Lee men again completed a sweep with a 70-55 triumph, their eighth in a row. Abby Bertram had 19 points and four steals for the Lady Flames (11-3, 5-1), who led 67-38 after three quarters, and Anna Woodford and Kayla Tillie scored 10 and nine points. Nicky Widenski had five assists and Lindsey Roddy, Becca Cheeks and Camryn Grant collected seven rebounds each. For the Flames (9-5, 6-0), Michael McGuirk and Colton Blevins each scored 17 points, McGuirk with 11 rebounds, and Cody Jones, Ryan Montgomery and Parker Suedekum had five assists apiece.

» The Covenant men won 87-66 in their USA South game at Pfeiffer as Will Crumly had 27 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth consecutive double-double. Also for the Scots (6-6, 5-0), Bailey Spragg scored 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and passed for six assists, James Mitchell was 4-for-5 on 3s for 12 points and Noah Oetjen was 3-for-3 on 3s in totaling 11 points and equaled Mitchell's four assists.

» The Covenant women lost 61-36 at LaGrange and are 4-10 overall, 2-4 in the USA South. Joanna Smith had 12 points and nine rebounds, Bekah Walter 10 points and Taylor Robinson seven rebounds in defeat. Marilauren Farr had 18 points and 11 rebounds for LaGrange (7-6, 3-3).

» The first-place Bryan College women won 84-70 in their Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup at Tennessee Wesleyan, and Bryan's men followed with an 88-86 overtime victory after trailing by 13 points with 11 minutes to go in the second half. Darius Filer put TWU (8-5, 4-4) ahead 78-76 with one second left, but the Lions' EJ Bush retied it at the horn and Austin Douglas and Keaton Dotson each scored four of the visitors' 10 overtime points. Dotson scored 21 with four 3s for the game, and Brandon Thomas scored 15 on 7-of-9 shooting for Bryan (7-8, 5-5). Bush had 10 rebounds with 11 points, and Isaiah McClain also scored 11. Wesleyan's Ty Patterson had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Parker Morgan scored 14 points, Jalen Oliver had 13 plus eight assists and Todd Lansden grabbed nine rebounds. In the women's game, Deandra Luna had 20 points with four 3s, seven rebounds and four assists for the Lady Lions (13-1, 11-0), who are ranked 17th in NAIA Division II, while Destiny Kassner and Karli Combs scored 17 and 11 points with three 3s apiece and Amber Levi had eight rebounds. Kassner was 7-of-10 from the field. For TWU (7-5, 5-5), Hunter Simpson had 30 points and 13 rebounds and Kenzie Conn added 10 points and seven rebounds.

» The Reinhardt women won their AAC game at Columbia International by a 70-35 score, and none of the Lady Eagles scored more than 12 points and none of their starters played more than 21 minutes. Two of those were Jada Hubbard from Heritage High School with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Bethany Headrick from Ringgold High with 10 points and six rebounds. Hubbard and Headrick lead Reinhardt (8-6, 7-4) in scoring with 15.4 and 13.3 points per game. Hubbard also averages 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.4 steals; Headrick averages 6.6 rebounds and has hit 91.2 percent of her free throws (31 of 34).

» Middle Georgia State was 13-of-28 on 3s to Dalton State's 3-of-14 and beat the host Roadrunners 86-72 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Darrell White, Antony Edwards and Tyrone Young each scored 21 points for the Knights (8-3, 3-3), White with nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals and Edwards with seven rebounds. Elijah Staley had 15 points and seven rebounds for Dalton State (8-6, 3-3), while Randy Bell had 14 points and four assists and Sean Cranney added 13 points. Sean Chislom pulled down eight rebounds.

» Haris Price, a Carson-Newman senior guard from Gatlinburg who started her college career at Lee and was the 2015-16 GSC freshman of the year, scored a career-high 39 points on 16-of-20 shooting from the field in the Lady Eagles' 90-77 South Atlantic Conference home victory over Catawba on Saturday. She was 2-of-3 on 3-pointers and added three steals. Price was co-player of the year in the SAC and a WBCA first-team All-American last season.

» The Massasoit Community College women from Massachusetts are 13-0 after winning 58-37 at Georgia Northwestern behind 24 points from Daja Polk and 13 from Nina Robinson. Gracen Hobbs scored 12 with four 3s and Jerriale Jackson and Katelyn O'Toole had 11 and nine rebounds for Georgia Northwestern (4-8). Massasoit is No. 1 in NJCAA Division III.
