Two touted defensive backs from Georgia's 2017 signing class have been submitted into the NCAA transfer portal by the university's compliance office and are not enrolled in spring semester classes.
Sophomore Deangelo Gibbs and redshirt freshman Tray Bishop are now allowed to be contacted by other schools. Gibbs played in only seven games this past season, making seven tackles, while Bishop redshirted during the 2017 season and didn't play this past year.
Gibbs was the nation's No. 4 safety prospect and the No. 49 overall recruit in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2017 cycle. He enrolled in January 2017 and actually worked with the first-team defense during his first spring.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder from Oxford, Georgia, had two tackles in his debut against Appalachian State, but he played in just six games as a freshman and was not with the Bulldogs for their run to the championship game of the College Football Playoff. He underwent offseason shoulder surgery and did not attend spring semester classes last year.
Gibbs did not play in five of Georgia's last six games this past season before the trip to the Sugar Bowl, which he did not make.
"Deangelo is not with the team right now," Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart said last month during on-campus workouts for the bowl. "He's just not with the team."
When asked whether Gibbs could return, Smart said, "He's not on the team."
Bishop was the nation's No. 20 cornerback and No. 153 overall recruit out of Dawson, Georgia, and his problems in Athens have been documented. In November 2017, the 6-3, 210-pounder was alleged to have recorded a woman in his dorm room without her permission.
He was arrested last May and charged with felony "surveillance or eavesdropping" and spent this past season on the scout team.
Gran staying put
Kentucky offensive coordinator Eddie Gran was offered the same role at Georgia, according to a report Thursday from Kentucky Sports Radio. Gran announced via Twitter that he was staying, posting, "I'm all in. Let's do this!"
The Times Free Press has not been able to confirm whether Gran, who previously coached in the Southeastern Conference at Ole Miss, Auburn and Tennessee, was actually offered the position by Smart.
